review: broken beats

Papa News

London based record label starts off heavily in season2006. Amongst others the label made a name through the famous Reel People releases just being reissued on Defected. Highlight last year was the Domu remix of Reel People’s “the rain” which is a heavy Boogie-Smasher with Domu’s ass-shaking beats underneath- well, we wrote about it last year.
In 2006 they come up...

with a series of high quality releases. The first one is Domu vs. Papa featuring a Domu remix for Simon Grey’s “Galactica Suite”, which is reminiscent of the classic Afronaught “Transcend me” and has been kicking asses at London’s Coop night for months. Recommended on the flip is the Domu Dub of The Realm & V’s “One Chance” which, at first, seems not to be so overwhelming unless you’ve heard it in the clubs!
Second release is the legendary dance duo Faze Action who present a new moniker called Orto, concentrating on the more broken, jazzy and soulful West London Sounds, besides the already known straight New York Funk and Disco influence, they were inspired by in the last years. This 12” is called “Waiting is over” featuring the great voice of Vanessa Freeman adding the certain soulful element to the funky broken beat structure, which sounds very organic. Faze Action’s classic strings give it the trademark feeling. On the other side is a straight remix by 83 West for those who prefer funky house grooves. The highlight of the first Papa releases of 2006 is undoubtedly Dj Spinna featuring Heavy “We can change this world” which saw the light of day in the shops end of march. Heavy is a duo coming from New York and consists of Nicky Guiland and Casey Benjamin and are already known for their great neo soul productions on Kindred Spirits in 2004. In combination with Spinna’s great broken twist and dirty synth bass the song becomes a soulful and emotional broken beat heater, charted by many leading Djs of the scene. The vocals are somehow destroyed by a Vocoder but teaming up perfectly with the other synth sounds. On the flip is a deep Osunlade remix, that keeps the soulful elements and twists it to a trademark Osunlade house groover also played in the Bogaloo Radio Show by Matthias Desch.
In summer 2006 the album “Intergalactic Soul” by Dj Spinna is due to be released on Papa, featuring a long list of well-known artists so keep your eyes and ears open!
